BFI Film Academy Leeds

The BFI Film Academy aims to help train and inspire the next generation of UK filmmakers, supporting talented and committed young people aged 16-19 to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help make a career in film a reality.

The BFI Film Academy offers training for every film industry role, from writing to production, sound design, editing and camera, and provides learning around film history and cinematic storytelling to inspire an appreciation of film culture in the round.

The BFI Film Academy Leeds is delivered by Leeds Young Film in partnership with Access Moving Image and Beta FilmWorks.

  • You will also have the opportunity to complete a NCFE Level 2 qualification on the course.

The course runs from October - December 2019 at Leeds Town Hall, with weekly evening sessions and an intensive filmmaking week in October half-term.

  • Script Development - Saturday 12 October 2019, 10am - 4pm
  • Introduction to Genre, Classification and Exhibition - Wednesday 16 October 2019, 5pm - 7pm
  • Script Development - Saturday 19 October 2019, 10am - 4pm
  • Filmmaking Week - Monday 28 October - Friday 1 November 2019, 10am - 4pm
  • Film Criticism & Journalism - Wednesday 6 November 2019, 5pm - 7pm
  • Planning for Celebration Event - Wednesday 13, 20 & 27 November 2019, 5pm - 7pm
  • Celebration Event at Hyde Park Picture House - Saturday 30 November 2019, 10:30am - 11:30am
  • NCFE Portfolio Work - Wednesday 4, 11 & 18 December 2019 5pm - 7pm

Course Critieria

In order to apply for the BFI Film Academy Leeds course, you must:

  • Be aged 16-19 years old on the first day of the course.
  • Be a UK resident.
  • Have a passion or talent for filmmaking and an ambition to work in the film industry.
  • Be able to commit to the duration of the course.
  • Not currently be at university or enrolled at university when the course starts.

If you have previously enrolled on a Film Academy course you are not able to apply.

Courses cost £25. If you are unable to pay the full course fee, don’t let this discourage you from applying as costs may be waived. Bursaries for travel and childcare are also available if you require assistance with these costs.
