This 1972 cinema classic is a musical drama starring Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey and Michael York. Set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic in 1931, under the presence of the growing Nazi Party, the film is loosely based on the 1966 Broadway musical Cabaret by Kander and Ebb, which was adapted from the novel The Berlin Stories / Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood and the 1951 play I Am a Camera adapted from the same book.

This multi award winning film was a bounce back for Fosse after Sweet Charity flopped and taught Fosse that realism in musicals had a better response than unjustifiable musical numbers, i.e randomly bursting into song. In 1973 not only did Fosse win best director for Cabaret, he won an Emmy for Liza with a Z and two Tony’s for Pippin. The first and most likely only time this will ever be achieved.

“[Liza] displays energy, verve, and professionalism of the first order. It’s classical Broadway style, crisply directed, every element calculated to bring out the best of the performer at the peak of her powers.” - Culture Vulture, 2006

Fosse in Film: Mashiya Presents is screening five Bob Fosse films (Sweet Charity, Lenny, Cabaret, Liza with a Z and All That Jazz) to demonstrate and celebrate the breadth and skill of Fosse’s directing and choreography in film. The films will be shown as part of Scalarama Festival Leeds 2019 with funding from Leeds Inspired and support from key Leeds partners including Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds Film and Northern School for Contemporary Dance.

This event is part of the Scalarama Leeds 2019 programme. If you are unaware of Scalarama, it is a national (and sometimes international) festival divided into regional groups that screen films across the whole of September each year (est. 2011). The festival champions DIY cinema events inspired by the energy, creativity, passion and ethos of the Scala cinema (1978-1993) in London; showcasing films less seen at cinemas and sometimes in unusual places.
