Buy tickets for both Cabaret and Liza with a Z for just £7.50, in the Fosse in Film double bill at The Wardrobe.

Liza with a "Z": A Concert for Television is a 1972 concert film made for television and starring Liza Minnelli immediately after the success of Cabaret of the same year using the same director/choreographer and music writers (Fosse, Ebb and Kander). Filmed at the Lyceum Theatre in New York after only eight weeks of rehearsals, the concert was shot with eight 16mm film cameras at the insistence of Fosse, in contrast to other television specials of the time which were all shot on videotape.

Singer sponsored the production, even though the producers did their best to keep any of the sponsors from seeing the rehearsals for fear of them pulling out due to Minnelli's short skirts. The concert showcases the amazing singing talent of Liza and her ability to be powerfully charming and vulnerable, yet totally in control on stage.

Fosse in Film: Mashiya Presents is screening five Bob Fosse films (Sweet Charity, Lenny, Cabaret, Liza with a Z and All That Jazz) to demonstrate and celebrate the breadth and skill of Fosse’s directing and choreography in film. The films will be shown as part of Scalarama Festival Leeds 2019 with funding from Leeds Inspired and support from key Leeds partners including Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds Film and Northern School for Contemporary Dance.

This event is part of the Scalarama Leeds 2019 programme. If you are unaware of Scalarama, it is a national (and sometimes international) festival divided into regional groups that screen films across the whole of September each year (est. 2011). The festival champions DIY cinema events inspired by the energy, creativity, passion and ethos of the Scala cinema (1978-1993) in London; showcasing films less seen at cinemas and sometimes in unusual places. For more details about Scalarama Leeds 201 check out Facebook and Twitter.
